The maker of Nexium has said the drug maker will make the company the first to sell a generic version of the drug in the U. S.
Eli Lilly, Lilly’s parent company, will begin selling the drug, which was the Lilly-led first-to-file for the drug, at a reduced price.
Nexium, which is marketed under the name Zithromax, is the generic version of Zantac, a drug that was pulled from the market in 2014 for its potential to cause cancer.
A Lilly spokesperson told The Canadian Press that Eli Lilly “will not comment on potential drug approvals for generic products in the U. S.”
Lilly’s U. drug sales fell by half in the first nine months of the year, to $8.4 billion, or 27 percent of total U. sales. In the first nine months of the year, sales of the drug increased by more than $2.2 billion.
Nexium sales also have been declining in Europe, where the drugmaker is expected to add new generic competitors to its U. patent on the drug.
In Europe, sales of Nexium fell 1 percent in the first nine months of the year.
Lilly’s Nexium sales were down 2 percent in the first nine months of the year in the United States and in Europe.
The company has said that sales in the U. have dropped from a peak of $5.45 billion in January to $4.45 billion in September.
“The company’s portfolio includes a number of other products that are marketed for a variety of uses including Zithromax and amoxicillin,” Lilly said in a statement.
A separate company statement said that the company would continue to market a generic version of Zithromax until it can reach a deal with Eli Lilly for its product.
Lilly also said that the company would not comment on the results of its clinical trials.
